EMCS: only 4 weeks to go
Tuesday, December 7th, 2010On 1 January 2011, EMCS (the Excise Movement and Control System), a new computerized system for monitoring the movement of alcohol, tobacco and energy products within the EU, becomes fully operational. Member States’ authorities and economic operators must join the system by 1 January 2011, marking the end of the transitional period which started on 1 April 2010. As of 1 January 2011 the existing system based on paper forms cannot be used for new movements.

On 1 April 2010, a new electronic system for monitoring and controlling the movement of excise goods (alcohol, tobacco and energy products) within the EU becomes operational. The Excise Movement and Control System (EMCS) will make intra-EU trade in excise goods cheaper and simpler for operators, while also making it quicker and easier for Member States to tackle excise fraud.
