Thu, 29 Mar 2018 by Customs 4 Trade

On March 26th, 2018, the European Commission initiated a safeguard investigation concerning imports of steel products.

On March 22nd, 2018, the US Government decided to suspend for a determined period the additional customs duties on steel and aluminium products. The suspension period goes from March 23, 2018 to April 30, 2018, for the following countries of origin Canada, Mexico, Australia, Argentina, South Korea, Brazil and member countries of the European Union. However, as of May 1, 2018, the additional customs duty should be applicable to all countries of origin. Countries are negotiating with the US to be exempted.

In the meantime, the European Commission initiated a safeguard investigation concerning imports of steel products. The investigation will determine whether the products concerned are being imported into the Union in such greatly increased quantities and/or on such terms or conditions as to cause, or threaten to cause, serious injury to the Union producers of like or directly competing products.
