Understanding the different types of UK Ports, CSPs, and how they work
Navigating UK customs clearance requires more than just filing the right declarations. The port you use, the Community Systems Provider that operates it, and the specific clearance procedures that apply all have a direct impact on your costs, operational efficiency, and the speed at which your goods are released. Getting this wrong can mean delays, additional administrative steps, and compliance exposure that could have been avoided with the right knowledge upfront.
In the UK, ports are connected to a Community Systems Provider, or CSP, which in turn connects to CHIEF and CDS. Ports may be inventory linked, non-inventory linked, linked to the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS), or a combination of these, and specific customs clearance procedures apply to each. Knowing which type of port you are using before you ship your goods is essential.
In this video, you will learn how each port type works in practice, what steps are required for each, and how CAS supports all three models. For inventory linked ports, CAS integrates with the CSP to associate declarations via a unique identifier. For non-inventory linked ports, CAS customers can use C4T's badge, with declarations processed and released automatically once goods are marked as arrived. For GVMS ports, CAS supports pre-lodged declarations and captures all vehicle and destination details, streamlining the entire process through to goods movement reference validation and clearance.
Which port types you use is a strategic decision. C4T's customs experts can advise you on the best approach for your specific customs flows.
